TOKYO : The largest city in the world
The largest city in the world by population is Tokyo. Japan's capital has become an international metropolis. In 2007, it has 35.7 million inhabitants and extends to Yokohama (strict administrative capital account 12700000). In 1880 Tokyo was home to less than a million residents. It has greatly benefited from the economic boom in the 1960s and 1970s expansion of the city took place vertically: thousands of new buildings, modern skyscrapers, vast transportation network etc. But today, if it is one the fastest growing cities in the world, it suffers from its high density: 5,647 people per square kilometer and the lack of green space.
